Highland Band and Color Guard swept the Rebel Rouser competition on Tuesday, November 1st . The event was hosted by Quartz Hill High School. HHS band members brought home five trophies including first place for Percussion, and the coveted Sweepstakes for Color Guard (Auxiliary), Music, Visuals, and Overall Band.

The 2016 Band Show is titled “Villains” and the music is called “Gotham.”  Color Guard members play villains, including the Joker, Harley Quinn, Bonnie and Clyde, El Diablo, Cat Woman and the Wicked Witch, among other famous less-than-heroic characters. Some of the music comes from various Batman films.

The Color Guard costumes are all dark red to signify evil, while the band wears black marching uniforms, making for an exciting, darkly visual performance. The Color Guard starts the show behind bars, escapes, are pursued by the “police” (band members) and captured by the police by the end of the show.

According to Taylor LaCour-Granados, a flag line leader on Highland’s Color Guard, this show has been really satisfying to work on. She says, “I was really proud of my teammates applying all the hard work from practice and taking home the Gold, regardless of practice conditions this fall.” Color Guard has limited field access.

Other bands competing in the event included Palmdale High School, Antelope Valley High School, Barstow High School, Eastside High School, Littlerock High School, Rosamond High School, and Knight High School.

Band Director McCaslin says, “I’m very proud of the band winning Sweepstakes, High Visual and High Music, along with Color Guard. Also, our Percussion took first place.”
